Posted on: 11 July 2015

When it comes to becoming immersed in the great love stories of British literature, Pride and Prejudice is one of the most powerful. Women and girls of all ages, from all walks of life can relate to Lizzie (Elizabeth) Bennett and her struggles to maintain her identity in the face of constant pressures to conform, not to mention dealing with a wonderful yet frustrating man. And of course, there is the allure of traditional British culture and society. If you want to live out your ultimate Pride and Prejudice fantasy, get to know a few things you can do to feel more like Lizzie Bennett.

Go toTea or Serve Tea at Home (with Guests of Course)

In traditional British culture, there are two different forms of tea that may be attended or served daily. The first is afternoon tea. Afternoon tea was a practice that was primarily performed by the upper classes, particularly ladies.

Afternoon tea was also known as low tea because the tables were lower to the ground. At this social engagement, they would commonly serve tea, bread and butter, and various cakes. It was not meant to be a meal and was often served in the late afternoon or early evening.

High tea, on the other hand, was generally for working class families and individuals and was served as a full meal accompanied by strong tea. This often involved bread and butter as well, with additional meats, savories, and other warm and hearty foods to fill empty bellies. Contact a company like Clumzy Clover Teas & Treasures for more information about high tea.

Sitting down to tea and inviting others to come for afternoon or high tea will make you feel as if you have been transported back to the days of social calls and strict etiquette that Lizzie and Mr. Darcy met and fell in love in.

Have A Ball

One of the best parts about being a Bennett sister would have been going to grand balls and dancing the night away. So, why not live out your Pride and Prejudice fantasy by hosting your own grand ball?

You can go as big as you want with this event, but one of the best ways to ensure you feel the real effect of the Pride and Prejudice, you should definitely go for period costumes. That means the ladies in Regency era-style dresses. While corsets were still in style, the silhouettes were not overly full. Waistlines were high, generally an empire waist. For men, a tied neckcloth tails and top hats were the order of the day.

So, get dressed up in period cloths and hire a string ensemble to play Regency era music. Drink wine, dance, and be merry and enjoy the bygone fun of being without cell phones, social media, and the like and simply enjoy the company of the people around you as you socialize and dance.

Now that you have a few ideas of what you can do to live out your Pride and Prejudice fantasy, you can get started. And who knows, maybe you will meet your Mr. Darcy in the process.
